Professor Alfred Lam

Professor Lam is the Foundation Chair Professor of Pathology at Griffith University with 30 years’ experience in diagnostic and molecular pathology. His research focuses on diagnostic and molecular pathology of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, endocrine, oral and head/neck. He has produced over 500 publications with a citation index (Scopus H index) for his publication of 69 in 2024. His research contributions made him awarded the Best Senior Researcher in 2011, Excellence in Research Supervision in 2024 by Griffith University’s Vice Chancellor, and the winner of the Australian Society of Medical Research Queensland Health and Medical Research Award in 2013.
Professor Lam has contributed to 3 editions of the World Health Organization on the classification of tumours since 2003. He is an expert editor of the Fifth edition of the World Health Organization book on the classification of Digestive tract tumour pathology. He also edited 5 books on cancers, as well as being involved in more than 70 book chapters.
Professor Lam chairs the development of a dataset for the reporting of oesophageal cancer by the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR). He has also contributed to multiple structured cancer protocols in Australia and ICCR.
Professor Lam has been nominated as the division’s Honorary Secretary and Board director since 2019. He is also the President of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Pathology Society in 2022-2023. In RCPA, he has been working as an Assistant Chief Examiner in anatomical pathology. Since 2018, he has been elected the Principal Chief Examiner for anatomical pathology in the Faculty of Science.
On 2022 Australia Day, Professor Lam was awarded a Member of Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to tertiary education, to research, and to pathology.
